Chicago White Sox 2018 Top 50 Prospects (+1)

Chicago White Sox have one of the deepest farm systems in the majors at the moment. It will only get stronger as they have the 4th overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. They could target RHP Casey Mize out of Auburn or LHP Shane McClanahan from South Florida.

My prospect rankings are based on long term potential. Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert will both have very productive careers, with Robert edging him out long term. Michael Kopech was ranked a bit lower because I believe he might end up in the pen at some point. I tend to rank RPs a bit lower than SPs.

There’s a lot to get excited about in 2018 for the White Sox.  Will Jimenez make his debut? Will Robert reach AAA? Kopech will most likely make his debut in 2018 but when?

It’s a good time to be a White Sox fan. Their future couldn’t look brighter.

Prospects1500 Tiers:
Tier 1: Players with high expectations of both making the majors and playing at an All-Star level for a number of years
Tier 2: Players with an above average expectation of making the majors and being a solid contributor
Tier 3: Players with an average expectation of making the majors and being a solid contributor
Tier 4: Players who have the potential of making the majors, or have high likelihood of making the majors but providing minimal impact (e.g. middle reliever, low-ceiling UT guys)
Tier 5: Players who are worth keeping an eye on, but likely to never make a team’s 40-man roster

Tier 1

1. Luis Robert, OF
Age: 20
Highest Level 2017: (Rookie)
Robert showed us a small sample of what he is capable of in 2017, appearing in 28 games (84 AB). He batted .310 AVG, .491 OBP, .536 SLG, 1.027 OPS, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 17 R, 12-15 SB, 20.2 K%, 19.3 BB%. The walk rate is remarkable considering how young he is. Robert needs to get stronger, once he does look for his power to grow. 2018 will be a very important year for Luis as he continues to mature and work on his game. I envision him climbing up the White Sox system quickly in 2018, don’t be surprised if he reaches AAA this year. Look for Luis Robert to enter the conversation for MLB’s Top Prospect next year. I believe he has the brightest future in the White Sox system.

2. Eloy Jimenez, OF
Age: 21
Highest Level 2017: (AA)
Jimenez was traded to the White Sox in the Jose Quintana deal, and possesses all the tools to become an all-star. His walk rate is still a major concern, walking only 6.8% in 2017. Currently he strikes out over 20% of the time. Once he reaches Triple-A the strikeout rate will most likely increase. In 2017 at Birmingham (AA) Eloy stashed a .353 AVG, .397 OBP, .559 SLG, .956 OPS, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 11 R, in 18 games (68 AB). Jimenez will continue to develop and most likely make his MLB debut in 2018.

3. Michael Kopech, RHP
Age: 21
Highest Level 2017: (AAA)
This flamethrowing righty is surging up in prospect rankings and no pitching prospect is hotter than Kopech right now. He can throw 100 mph with ease. Kopech managed to strikeout 172 batters in only 134 innings across Double-A and Triple-A. He also posted a 9-8 record, 2.88 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, holding batters to a .193 batting average. His control does scare me a bit and I believe he might be slated for a bullpen role or future closer.

Tier 2

4. Dylan Cease, RHP
Age: 22
Highest Level 2017: (A)
Cease came over to the White Sox in the Quintana trade along with Jimenez. In 2017 Cease struckout 126 batters in only 92 innings across the Cubs and White Sox A levels. He posted an ugly 1-10 record, but showed better command after the trade. K% dropped from 34.7% to 29.7%, while his walks also dropped from 12.2% to 10.3%. Dylan cleaned up his delivery a bit, but still has some work to do. In 2018 expect him to continue to move up the White Sox system rather quickly. Changeup needs some refining, but he’s not far away from becoming something special.

5. Alec Hansen, RHP
Age: 23
Highest Level 2017: (AA)
Hansen rose quickly through the White Sox system in 2017, starting at A, moving to High-A and eventually ending his season at AA. Hansen pitched 140 innings between the 3 levels, striking out 191 batters, while only walking 51, starting 26 games. He towers over his opponents standing 6-7, 235 pounds. His big frame is causing him some delivery issues and poses some injury risks. It wouldn’t surprise me if he reaches the Majors quicker than Kopech and Cease, but he also has a better chance to stick as a starter long term.

6. Dane Dunning, RHP
Age: 23
Highest Level 2017: (A-Adv)
Dunning started 2017 at single A, only lasting 4 games before getting the promotion to High-A. In 26 innings at single A, he was 2-0 with a 0.35 ERA, allowing only 2 walks and striking out 33. Dunning continued his dominance at High-A, striking out 135 batters and only walking 36 in 118 innings. He posted a 6-8 record and 3.51 ERA. Expect him to rise quickly through the White Sox system as it won’t be too long before he reaches the majors.

7. Jake Burger, 3B
Age: 21
Highest Level 2017: (A)
11th overall pick in the 2017 draft, Burger has drawn comparisons to former White Sox 3B Todd Frazier. His raw power and good bat speed are rare, but only walked 14 times in 194 AB between Rookie and Single-A levels. Burger was quickly called up from Rookie ball, and put up these numbers at Kannapolis: .271 AVG, .335 OBP, .462 SLG, .744 OPS, 4 HR, 27 RBI and 21 R. He tends to wait for his pitches but will have to improve the walk rate.

8. Zack Collins, C
Age: 22
Highest Level 2017: (AA)
Collins started 2017 at High-A where he hit 17 home runs in 101 games. He then moved to AA, where he sported a .235 AVG, .422 OBP, .471 SLG, .893 OPS, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 7 R, 11 K, 11 BB in 12 games. His walk rate was 24% at AA and he’s very patient at the plate for a catcher. K% needs to go down as he is currently striking out at 24.4%. His craft behind the plate needs work as well.  The White Sox want him at backstop long term but there is chance he moves to 1B.

9. Carson Fulmer, RHP
Age: 24
Highest Level 2017: (MLB)
Fulmer pitched most of 2017 at Triple A, sporting a disappointing 7-9, 5.79 ERA in 126 innings, with a weak 6.86 K/9. White Sox promoted him in late August where he performed rather well in the majors. In 23 innings he was 3-1, 3.86 ERA, with his K/9 rising to 7.33, holding batters to a remarkable .188 batting average. Expect Carson to be starting for the White Sox opening day.

10. Blake Rutherford, OF
Age: 20
Highest Level 2017: (A)
2017 was very disappointing for Rutherford, acquired by the White Sox from the Yankees in the Frazier trade. Rutherford was the prize prospect in the trade, however he hasn’t been able to put it all together. The power has disappeared with only 2 HR in 396 AB across Yankees and Sox Single-A levels. Overall he slashed .260 AVG, .326 OBP, .348 SLG, .674 OPS, 2 HR, 35 RBI, 52 R, 38 BB, 76 SO. While 2017 was definitely a down year for Blake, look for him to bounce back in 2018.

Tier 3

11. Zack Burdi, RHP
Age: 22
Highest Level 2017: (AAA)
Burdi started 2017 in the closer role for Charlotte Knights (AAA), his season was cut short when he was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Injury ultimately led to Tommy John Surgery in late July. Prior to the injury Burdi was 0-4 with a 4.05 ERA, converting 7/9 save opportunities, 51 SO, and 17 walks in 29 games. His K/9 was stellar at 13.77. Zack will continue to rehab and hopefully make an appearance late 2018.

12. Spencer Adams, RHP
Age: 21
Highest Level 2017: (AA)
Adams spent his entire year at Birmingham Barons (AA), where he spotted a 7-15 record, 4.42 ERA, 113 SO, 40 BB, 152 IP in 26 games. Spencer doesn’t strike out a ton (6.66 K/9) but has decent control only allowing 2.36 BB/9. His changeup could use some work and he definitely needs to bulk up his 170 pound frame.

13. Gavin Sheets, 1B
Age: 21
Highest Level 2017: (A)
White Sox 2nd round pick (49th overall) in 2017, Sheets spent most of 2017 at Kannapolis (A) where he played 52 games hitting .266 AVG, .346 OBP, .365 SLG, .710 OPS, 3 HR, 25 RBI, 34 SO, 20 BB in 52 games. His large frame stands at 6-4, 230. Some scouts think he’ll stay at first base, while others have him pegged for the DH role.

14. Micker Adolfo, OF
Age: 21
Highest Level 2017: (A)
Adolfo was considered as the #2 International prospect when he signed with the White Sox in 2013. There is no denying that he has all the tools to be something special, however injuries and under achieving have slowed down his process. In 2017, he batted .264 AVG, .331 OBP, .453 SLG, .784 OPS, 16 HR, 68 RBI, 31.5 K%, 6.6%BB in 112 games. Adolfo needs to be more patient as he currently strikes out at an alarming rate of 31.5%, and only walks 6.6% of the time. If he can stay healthy and continues to develop he will be in the Top 10 conversation next year.

15. Luis Alexander Basabe, OF
Age: 21
Highest Level 2017: (A-Advanced)
Basabe is a switch hitting, speedy outfielder, who managed to swipe 17 of 23 bases at Winston-Salem. He batted .221, 5 HR, 36 RBI, 52 R, .320 OBP, .320 SLG, .640 OPS, 23.9 K%, 11.3 BB%. Luis needs to be more patient at the plate in 2018 but has intriguing 20/20 potential.

16. Casey Gillaspie, 1B
Age: 24
Highest Level 2017: (AAA)
Coming over from Tampa in the Dan Jennings deal, the switch hitting first baseman spent time between Rays and White Sox AAA teams. Gillaspie’s big frame towers over opponents at  6-4, 240. In 2017 he sported an .223 AVG, .297 OBP, .373 SLG, .670 OPS, 15 HR, 62 RBI, 62 R, 100 SO, 50 BB in 125 games. While his raw power is undeniable, he will need to improve on his current 19.5 K%.

17. A.J. Puckett, RHP
Age: 22
Highest Level 2017: (A-Adv)
Puckett was acquired by the White Sox in the Melky Cabrera deal. He split time between Wilmington (Royals A+) and Winston-Salem (White Sox A+). In 2017 Puckett went 10-7, 3.98 ERA, 119 SO, 51 BB in 25 games. He has great command of his pitches and improved his walk rate from 3.82 BB/9 too 1.65 BB/9 after the trade. Keep a very close eye on him.

18. Jordan Guerrero, LHP
Age: 23
Highest Level 2017: (AA)
Spending all of his playing time at Birmingham Barons in 2017, Guerrero sported a 7-12 record, 4.18 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 136 SO, 43 BB, 22.1 K%, 7.0 BB% while holding batters to .263 average in 25 games. He managed to improve both his K/9 and BB/9 from a year ago and possess great command of his pitches. Guerrero tends to over use his changeup but is definitely someone to keep an eye on.

19. Thyago Vieira, RHP
Age: 24
Highest Level 2017: (MLB)
Vieira moved quickly through the Mariners system before the White Sox acquired him for international bonus money. This flame throwing righty can touch 100 mph with ease. He was 2-4 with 4.00 ERA and 1.30 WHIP, holding batters to an .236 average. Vieira converted 4 of 5 save opportunities and projects to be a future closer for the White Sox.

20. Seby Zavala, C
Age: 24
Highest Level 2017: (A-Adv)
Zavala split 2017 between Kannapolis (A) and Winston-Salem (A-Advanced). Considered by several prospect gurus to have had one of the best seasons for a minor league catcher last year. Slashed .282/.353/.499/.851 with 21 HR, 72 RBI and 193 total bases between the two levels. Seby should be grabbed in any deep dynasty league that rosters 400+ minor leaguers.

21. Ian Clarkin, LHP
Age: 22
Highest Level 2017: (A-Adv)
Traded to the White Sox as part of the Frazier deal, Clarkin spent most of 2017 playing for Tampa Tarpons (Yankees A+) where he went 4-5 with a 2.62 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 6.9% K/9, and 2.97 BB/9 in 15 games. He started 3 games for Winston-Salem but was less impressive posting an 4.0 K/9, 6.55 BB/9 in only 11 innings pitched.

22. Luis Martinez, RHP
Age: 22
Highest Level 2017: (A-Adv)
Martinez pitched very well in 2017, starting the season at Kannapolis (A) where he pitched 79 innings, going 8-2, 3.19 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 85 SO, 24 BB, 9.68 K/9, 2.73 BB/9. Martinez struggled upon his promotion to Winston-Salem (A+) allowing 16 ER in 16 IP. He stands at 6-6, 190, and has a great feel for his fastball which reaches 95 mph.

23. Charlie Tilson, OF
Age: 25
Highest Level 2017: (MLB)
Tilson missed most of the year with an stress reaction in his foot and stress fracture in his ankle. Before the injury he was the opening day favorite in center field for the Sox. The speedy outfielder should be ready to compete in spring of 2018.

24. Ryan Cordell, OF
Age: 25
Highest Level 2017: (AAA)
Acquired from Milwaukee for Anthony Swarzak in 2017, Cordell played most of the year at Colorado Springs, Milwaukee’s Triple-A affiliate. He performed quite well – .284 AVG, .349 OBP, .506 SLG, .855 OPS, 10 HR, 45 RBI, 49 R, 8.6 BB%, 22.3 K% in 68 games. Also managed to steal 9 out of 13 bases. Cordell was sidelined with a back injury and didn’t get a chance to debut for Charlotte.

Tier 4

25. Jordan Stephens, RHP
Age: 25
Highest Level 2017: (AA)
Stephens missed the first two months of 2017 due to forearm tendinitis, then performed rather well at Birmingham upon his return in 2017. He was 3-7 with a 3.14 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 83 SO and 35 BB in 91 IP in 16 starts. Stephens commands his fastball well but needs to refine his other offerings. He might be best suited for the bullpen role.

26. Amado Nunez, 3B
Age: 20
Highest Level 2017: (Rookie)
Nunez projects to be an above average defender with fringe batting tools. Across rookie ball in 2017 he slashed .193 AVG, .262 SLG, .253 SLG, .516 OPS, 1 HR, 18 RBI and 14 R, in 36 games. Nunez strikes out 20% of the time, while he only walks 7.8%. There’s still time for improvement and I recommend you put him on your watch list.

27. Bernardo Flores, LHP
Age: 22
Highest Level 2017: (A-Adv)
Flores split his time between Kannapolis (A) and Winston-Salem (A+) in 2017.  Overall he managed a 10-7 record, 3.42 ERA, and 1.25 WHIP, striking out 103 batters in 118 innings. He held batters to a .257 batting average. Changeup is Flores’ best offering, but his cutter and curve need refining.

28. Evan Skoug, C
Age: 22
Highest Level 2017: (A)
White Sox selected Skoug in the 7th round of the 2017 draft (207th overall). Following a brief stint at rookie ball Skoug was promoted to Kannapolis (A). He put up some unimpressive numbers: .154 AVG, .263 OBP, .308 SLG, .571 OPS, 2 HR and 7 RBI in 21 games, striking out an alarming 38.2% while only walking 10.5% of the time. Evan’s defensive skills behind the plate are fringe at best and he might be a better fit playing 1B.

29. Aaron Bummer, LHP
Age: 24
Highest Level 2017: (MLB)
Bummer moved quickly through the White Sox system in 2017, playing in all 3 levels before reaching the Show. He appeared in 22 games sporting a 1-3 record, 4.50 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, holding batters to a remarkable .178 batting average. Bummer will need to cut down his walks (15 BB in 22 IP) but has all the potential to be a respectful arm in the White Sox bullpen.

30. Trey Michalczewski, 3B
Age: 22
Highest Level 2017: (AA)
Appeared in 19 games for Winston-Salem (A+) before getting the call to Birmingham (AA). Michalczewski batted .234 AVG, .313 OBP, .356 SLG, .668 OPS, 9 HR, 38 RBI, 40 R in 106 games. He also managed to swipe 8 of 9 bases. His strikeout rate is alarming at 30% and he manages to walk only 9.3% of the time.

31. Jhoandro Alfaro, C
Age: 20
Highest Level 2017: (Rookie)
Alfaro has spent the last 3 years at rookie ball. Last season he sported a .220 AVG, .324 OBP, .264 SLG, .588 OPS. His strikeout rate spiked from 12.1% in 2016 to 24.4% in 2017. His offense needs improvement while his defense is coming along. He managed to throw out 12/31 stealing attempts, accumulating only 4 errors in the process.

32. Luis Curbelo, SS/2B
Age: 20
Highest Level 2017: (Rookie)
Curbelo is one my favorite deep sleepers in the White Sox system. Unfortunately 2017 was a shortened for Curbelo, undergoing meniscus surgery on his knee and managing to play in only 3 games. In 2016 he played mostly second base before making the switch to shortstop. Long term he might be a better fit at third.

33. Alex Call, OF
Age: 23
Highest Level 2017: (A-Adv)
Call started 2017 at Winston-Salem (A+) before going down with an intercostal strain in his ribs. The injury cost him over two and a half months in 2017. Upon his return he was sent down to rookie ball for a short stint. Promoted to Kannapolis (A) shortly after he slashed .248 AVG, .333 OBP, .366 SLG, .720 OPS, 19.6 K% and 9.5 BB% across 38 games.

34. Tyler Danish, RHP
Age: 23
Highest Level 2017: (MLB)
Danish spent the majority of his playing time at Charlotte Knights this past season. He under-performed posting a nasty 4-14 record, 5.47 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 4.6 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 across 138 innings. However he was called up to start one game for the White Sox in which he threw 5 shout-out innings. Danish managed to strikeout 6 but also walked 6 in his 2017 debut. Danish suffered a dislocated shoulder in a car crash which ended his season and he was removed from the 40-man roster in November.

35. Jameson Fisher, OF
Age: 24
Highest Level 2017: (A-Adv)
This former backstop split his playing time between Kannapolis (A) and Winston-Salmem (A+) in 2017. His stats in 124 games looked like this: .245 AVG, .342 OBP, .402 SLG, .744 OPS, 10 HR, 68 RBI and 68 R while striking out 20% of the time. Fisher was given a try out at third base but might end up at first base long term.

36. Willy Garcia, OF
Age: 25
Highest Level 2017: (MLB)
Claimed from the Phillies around this time last year, Garcia played 31 games for the Charlotte Knights before getting the call up to the majors. He strung together a .238 AVG, .305 OBP, .400 SLG, .705 OPS, 2 HR, 12 RBI and 15 R in 44 games with the White Sox but needs to improve on his 26.1 K%.

37. Tito Polo, OF
Age: 23
Highest Level 2017: (AA)
Sleeper alert, sleeper alert! Tito was having himself a fine season before being acquired as part of the Frazier deal in 2017. He posted a remarkable .382 batting average in 55 AB for Trenton Thunder (Yankees AA). His numbers decreased a bit following his playing time at Birmingham (AA). His strikeout rate increased from 12.5% to 19% and walk rate dropped 9.4% to 6.3%. Polo also managed to swipe 34 of 44 bases. Keep a close eye on him in dynasty leagues.

38. Luis Gonzalez, OF
Age: 22
Highest Level 2017: (A)
Taken by the White Sox in the 3rd round of the 2017 MLB Draft, 87th overall. Gonzalez spent most of the year at Kannapolis (A), where he hit .245 AVG, .356 OBP, .361 SLG, .717 OPS, 50 SO, 38 BB in 63 games. Started 31 games in center field in 2017. There’s definitely potential here so keep a close eye on him.

Tier 5

39. Jake Peter, 2B
Age: 24
Highest Level 2017: (AAA)
This versatile second baseman can do it all. He’s played 2B, SS, 3B, and the outfield all in 2017. Peter started 2017 at Birmingham where he played 75 games before his promotion to Charlotte. He had an impressive .292 AVG, .351 OBP, .506 SLG, .856 OPS. 9 HR, 28 RBI and 28 R in 45 games. His arrow is definitely pointing up.

40. Matt Rose, 1B
Age: 23
Highest Level 2017: (A-Adv)
Acquired from the Cubs in the Quintana deal last summer, Rose was considered a throw-in player in the deal. Across 101 games in the minors he posted a .242 AVG, .300 OBP, .479 SLG, .779 OPS, 18 HR, 61 RBI and 51 R. His strikeout rate increased slightly after the trade from 24.8% to 28.8%, while his walk rate improved from 5.9% to 8.6%. He also played 17 games at third.

41. Franklin Reyes, 1B
Age: 19
Highest Level 2017: (Rookie)
Reyes has a solid frame, standing at 6-4 and 205 pounds and only turned 19 in September. In 2017 Reyes played rookie ball slashing .249 AVG, .270 OBP, .361 SLG, .631 OPS, with 5 HR, 34 RBI in 56 games. He definitely needs to be more patient at the plate, walking 5 times in 241 AB. Franklin is still young and has time to develop his game.

42. Brian Clark, LHP
Age: 24
Highest Level 2017: (AAA)
Playing his first full season at Charlotte, Clark managed to pitch in 36 games out of the bullpen. He posted a 6-2 record, 4.01 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 44 SO, 13 BB, and 5 HLD while converting 2 out of 4 save opportunities. His strikeout and walk rate were respectful at 8.03 K/9 and 2.37 BB/9.

43. Corey Zangari, 1B
Age: 20
Highest Level 2017: (Injured-DL)
Zangari missed all of 2017 due to Tommy John Surgery. He’s a big dude at 6-4, 240. Once fully recovered look for him to continue to improve on his concerning 42.7 K%.

44. Kade McClure, RHP
Age: 21
Highest Level 2017: (A)
White Sox drafted this towering righty in the 6th round, 177th overall out of Louisville in 2017. McClure stands at 6-7, 230 pounds. He pitched 11 innings out of the bullpen, only a small sample size and went 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA, 0.55 WHIP, 19 K and only 3 walks while converting on his only save opportunity.

45. Danny Mendick, SS
Age: 24
Highest Level 2017: (AA)
22nd rounder out of UMASS-Lowell in 2015, Mendick spent 2017 between Winston-Salem (A-Advanced) and Double-A Birmingham. He put together a solid season hitting .256 with 10 HR and 51 RBI, also adding 12 SB. Potentially a utility IF type if he ever makes it to the majors.

46. Josue Guerrero, OF
Age: 18
Highest Level 2017: (Rookie)
Guerrero spent most of 2017 at DSL White Sox (R), playing 55 games while starting 43 in RF. Batted .222 AVG, .290 OBP, .348 SLG, .638 OPS, 3 HR, 25 RBI, 33 R and swiped 5 bases. Will need to improve his current 6.9% walk rate. Turning just 18 this past November, the future is bright for this young lad.

47. Justin Yurchak, 1B/3B
Age: 21
Highest Level 2017: (Rookie)
Yurchak destroyed rookie ball at Grand Falls in 2017 with an impressive .345 AVG, .448 OBP, .520 SLG, .968 OPS, 8 HR, 27 RBI, 46 R, 16 K%, 12.3 BB% in 60 games. He shared his playing time between first and third this past year. He’s my deep sleeper this year. Stash him on your watch list.

48. Maiker Feliz, 3B
Age: 20
Highest Level 2017: (Rookie)
Signing out of the Dominic Republic for $450,000 in 2013, Feliz’s development has been disappointing so far. In 2017 he took a step forward playing for AZL White Sox. Feliz batted .295 AVG, .377 OBP, .492 SLG, .869 OPS in 18 games while striking out 28% of the time and only walking 8.7%.

49. Yermin Mercedes, C
Age: 24
Highest Level 2017: (AA)
Mercedes was selected by the White Sox in the 2017 Rule 5 draft (Triple-A Phase) from Baltimore. He spent the majority of his playing time at Frederick (Baltimore A+) before being promoted to Double-A (Bowie Baysox). Overall sported a .276 AVG, .340 OBP, .455 SLG, .795 OPS, 16 HR, 62 RBI, 67 SO, 35 BB in 110 games.

50. Yosmer Solorzano, RHP
Age: 20
Highest Level 2017: (A-Adv)
Venezuelan righty spent majority of his playing time with Kannapolis (A). Solorzano started 24 games posting a disappointing 3-11 record, 6.28 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 91 SO, 48 BB in 116 innings. He is my deep deep sleeper but will have to improve his walk rate which currently sits at 3.73 BB/9.

One other White Sox minor leaguer to keep your eye on…

51. Anthony Villa, 1B
