Brewers Update – February

I want to start my monthly updates by adding some guys from other top lists that have come out since my write-up. Some players were identified in the comments (thanks!), but I want to get them all listed here with some thoughts so we can track through the season and keep them on the Prospect1500.com radar.

Guys I missed in my Top 50

Jordan Yamamoto RHP
Age: 20 (DOB: 5/11/1996)
Yamamoto got a C+ from Sickels and a commenter pointed out I probably missed him on my top 50. I agree. He did have his most successful pro season last year in Low A Wisconsin and has frankly out pitched fellow Hawaiian and 1st rounder Kodi Medeiros. Yamamoto will aim to continue to improve. Interested to see what level they start him at this season.

Josh Pennington, RHP
Age: 21 (DOB: 7/6/1995)
A 29th rounder from 2014 draft, Pennington was the other guy who came with Dubon and Shaw in the Thornburg deal. He was ranked the #19 Brewer prospect by Baseball America. I probably should’ve found a spot in my top 50 for him as his results as a starter have been pretty good so far with a 2.29 ERA, 1.220 WHIP in 78.2 IP. Control will need some more attention with 4.6 BB/9.

Tristan Archer, RHP
Age: 26 (DOB: 10/18/1990)
A 26 year old reliever in AA Biloxi last season, Sickels gave him a C grade. He’s a guy that could eventually be a mid-inning reliever in the bigs, but I didn’t rank him as he’s proved hittable (9.2 H/9 in pro ball) and has a pretty limited fantasy upside. Archer was not invited to spring training.

Yhonathan Barrios, RHP
Age: 25 (DOB: 12/1/1991)
Barrios made his MLB debut back in 2015 pitching well in relief, but injured his arm in spring training and needed rotator cuff surgery. If can prove he still has his upper 90’s velocity and stay healthy he could stick around to get another chance.

Zach Brown, RHP
Age: 22 (DOB: 12/15/1994)
Brown has some success in making it to low A after being drafted in the 5th round of the 2016 Amateur Draft out of Kentucky.  I may pay more attention if he can have continued success moving up the ranks.

Gabriel Garcia, 1B/3B
Age: 19 (DOB: 12/16/1997)
A 14th rounder in last year’s draft, Garcia had a very good debut in the Arizona League slashing .300/.393/.500 in 150 PA’s. Sickels gave him a C and I probably should’ve had him in my top 50. Will be interesting to watch and to see how aggressive the Brewers get in moving him up.

Payton Henry, C
Age: 19 (DOB: 6/24/1997)
A high school catcher taken in the 6th round of last 2016 FYPD. Henry split time with Feliciano in the AZL and held his own (.256/.333/.341) but is a year and a half older. Sickels gave him a C grade. Milwaukee may have to push him quicker due to the age, so he’ll have to improve quickly to stay on the depth chart.

Adrian Houser, RHP
Age: 24 (DOB: 2/2/1993)
Houser pitched two innings in 2015 before injuring his arm and pitching to mediocre results as a starter in Biloxi. Houser had some success at the lower levels of pro ball so we can continue to monitor.

Steve Kohlscheen, RHP
Age: 28 (DOB: 9/20/1988)
A minor league free agent pick up who came from SEA and SD, Kohlscheen is a reliever with an invite to spring training who got a C grade from Sickels. This is not really the kind of prospect that I get excited about, so he did not make my top 50.

Wendell Rijo, MI
Age: 21 (DOB: 9/4/1995)
Rijo came up in the Red Sox system and last season with Milwaukee’s A+ affiliate. Sickels gave him a C but I don’t see it. I’ll watch to see if he can change my mind this year.

Joantgel Segovia, OF
Age: 20 (DOB: 11/8/1996)
Signed out of Venezuela in 2013, Segovia appeared for a full year in the Pioneer league and did very well hitting .294 with more BB than SO (24/23) in 243 PA’s. He made Sickel’s list with a C grade and could be interesting. If his success continues you can add yet another CF to the Brewers prospect depth chart.

Forrest Snow, RHP
Age: 28 (DOB: 12/30/1988)
A free agent from Seattle, Snow is a reliever who got an invite to spring training. I think he’s a long shot to make the MLB pen unless he pitches lights out. I see him a minor league bullpen depth but Sickels gave him a C so I’ll put him on radar.

Brent Suter, LHP
Age: 27 (DOB: 8/29/1989)
Primarily a starter in the minors, the left hander got some action in Milwaukee last year, mostly in relief but did get 2 starts in 14 games. Suter is in camp and aims to get a spot in the bullpen and could get an occasional spot start over the course of the season if he pitches well. Worth noting he handled AAA better than some big time Brewer prospects with a 3.50 ERA and 1.292 WHIP in 110.2 IP.  He’s by no means a power pitcher, so there’s not much of a margin for error at the major league level.

Aaron Wilkerson, RHP
Age: 27 (DOB: 5/24/1989)
Wilkerson worked his way from an undrafted independent league pitcher to AAA with Boston until he was acquired by the Brewers last summer. He’s a starter who struggled in Colorado Springs last summer but will get a chance to impress the brass in Arizona as he was invited to spring training.

Weston Wilson, 3B
Age: 22 (DOB: 9/11/1994)
A 17th round pick in last year’s FYPD, Wilson got a C grade in Sickel’s list. He performed well slashing .318/.390/.498 in his pro debut but was old for the Pioneer League. He’ll get to play in Low-A. So far, so good for the Clemson Tiger.

  1. I would keep an eye on Brown for sure. His results in college didn’t really line up with the stuff he showed…he could have a big year.
